Every year on June 2nd Formia renews its devotion to the patron Saint Erasmus, protector of sailors, who with his martyrdom was able to demonstrate his love for Jesus. Saint Erasmus was a bishop and martyr under Diocletian, he died and was buried at Formia on June 2, 303.
The celebration is a feeling of faith and devotion that takes on a dominant, engaging and participatory meaning. Events, shows, art itineraries are planned to create an atmosphere of joy and serenity, increasing participation in the patronal feast.
The eve of the festival is dedicated to the cultural and social enhancement of the district of Castellone, with the event "The district of Castellone in a night of celebration". The patron saint is celebrated with a floral tribute and with the song of the hymn in his honour.
The next day there is a solemn procession with the statue of the Saint and his relics through the streets of the village. The community of Formia once again demonstrates the attachment to its patron saint with the celebration of a festival that unites the whole city.
The celebrations end with a musical concert and the classic fireworks show over the sea.
The programme is full of religious and cultural activities, which bring to life a moment of recollection and celebration that is handed down from year to year. These are days in which devotion to the saint are intertwined with the sensations that recall the ancient traditions, an integral part and moment of togetherness of the whole community.
