Onano. Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentino

Onano. Feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentino

On September 10th in Onano is the celebration of the patron Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, a friar of the order of St. Augustine who lived around 1200.

Nicola was born of elderly parents who had gone to Bari to ask St. Nicholas the grace to have a son.

In his life he distinguished himself for the abandonment of material things and for preaching for a spiritual life and today he is considered the protector of shipwrecked people, of plague victims, of prisoners but above all of the souls who are in purgatory.

The celebrations include a solemn mass and a procession through the streets of the village accompanied by the music of the band.

After the mass the 'panetti' of San Nicola are blessed and then distributed from house to house by the Confraternity of San Nicola. The day ends with a concert in the square.
