The village of Tuscania celebrates the Passion of Jesus Christ with a solemn procession on the evening of Good Friday in which the image is carried of Our Lady of Sorrows sitting under the cross with the dead Christ at our feet.
The procession starts from the Church of San Giovanni Decollato in Piazza Matteotti and winds among the numerous people gathered in prayer, while the windows and the balconies of the houses are illuminated and crowded with people.
The procession opens with hooded penitents dressed in long white tunics, either carrying the symbols of the Passion, grandiose luminous crosses or pulling heavy chains tied to their ankles.
Then follow the women, dressed in black, their faces covered by a veil, who are holding candles.
Then follows the band and finally the clergy. The follows Our Lady of Sorrows supported by the Heralds on the throne of lights, and followed by a river of people.
Traditionally the Addolorata, having left in the procession from the church of San Giovanni, must finish its journey and return to its own church.
