Isola del Liri. Feast of Our Lady of Loreto

On December 10, the feast of the Madonna of Loreto is celebrated.

The Madonna is Patron of the town and according to tradition, she saved the Isola del Liri from waves of the plague in 1656.

On this occasion, an ancient and solemn ritual is repeated, to remember the Duke Ugo Boncompagni's votive offering at the time of the fatal epidemic.

He invoked the aid of the Black Madonna and the city was spared.

The event is attended by a ceremony where the mayor of the city lights a torch in an oil lamp that stays lit up all year round at the entrance of the marvellous chapel dedicated to the Marchigiana Madonna at the entrance to the collegiate church of San Sebastion Martyr.
