Piansano. Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary

In Piansano, the devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary dates back to 1422 and the main altar of the church had a double dedication to the patron saint and Our Lady of the Rosary.

In 1771 the Sisters of St. Mary Magdalene Monastery built a statue in wood and papier-mâché for the high altar of the church.

Immediately the news spread of a miraculous statue in Piansano and hordes of faithful came to ask graces and favours.

Until 1855 the statue simply walked down the aisle and then a 'car was made', i.e. a sumptuous wooden canopy embellished with lacquer and coloured inlays, which is carried in procession.

In 1863, Pius IX decreed that the first Sunday in October was Solemnity to celebrate the coronation of Our Lady of the Rosary.
