Riofreddo. Feast of Saint George and the Madonna of Florentine

The most important festival of Riofreddo is the one dedicated to the patron Saint George and celebrated on April 23rd. Over the years its celebration has been combined with that of the Madonna of Florentine festival which recalls a miracle that took place in the little church of the Madonna.

It is said that a statue of the Madonna was found in the countryside of Riofreddo and that it was placed in a niche carved into the rock. Merchants brought it to Florence claiming it as their own but miraculously one night the statue returned to its niche in Riofreddo.

Religious festivities are marked by a procession while the whole municipality celebrates with music and dances which also celebrate the arrival of spring.

The feast of the Madonna dei Fiorentini is also celebrated on August 14th
