In Canino the Via Clodia runs through, it was an ancient Roman road that was built between the 3rd and 2nd century BC to connect Rome with Etruria and probably followed an ancient Etruscan route.
The ancient Via Clodia was a parallel to the Via Cassia and the Via Aurelia and was also called Via delle Terme because it ended in the famous spa town of Saturnia.
The links between the Etruscans and the Romans were very close and the first kings of Rome were of Etruscan origin. When the expansion of Rome began with the conquest of the neighbouring territories, the Romans took the pre-existing infrastructures and modernized them according to their criteria.
The Romans had conquered this part of Lazio around the third century BC and road construction was strategic.
In fact, a good road system was what allowed military and commercial control of the settlements to be maintained.
In Anguillara Sabazia it is possible to admire a stretch of about 250 meters long and 4.5 meters wide, which was developed according to the organization of troop movements.
The road also has shoulders that delimited the viable part.
Another stretch of the ancient Via Clodia can be found in Campagnano di Roma where the old post station of Mansio ad Vacanes was located, where the Via Cassia also passed, and around which a real village was founded.
Another post station is located near the village of Canino, where the Mansio di Maternum was located, of which today there are some impressive archaeological remains.
