The true symbol of Civita di Bagnoregio and of the whole area are the "calanchi" (the gullies), a conformation of the ground due to the sandy clays of marine origin that lie beneath the friable volcanic rocks.
This particular combination is subject to the erosive action of the waters that creates these particular shapes.
The ‘badlands’ are small valleys separated from each other by thin sharp ridges with clay soil on steep slopes and without vegetation.
On this surface ground rainwater flows, removing the superficial material and creating impressive gorges.
