Montelanico. Collemezzo castle

The Collemezzo (or Colubro) plateau is part of the famous Lepini Mountains and can be reached by car or on foot.

This plateau is located about 7 kilometers from the inhabited center and is connected with paths to the neighboring villages of Carpineto Romano, Segni and Norma, which is located on the Lepini side overlooking the sea and the Pontine plain.

The Colubro lake and a mountain cottage were built by the Doria-Pamphily family to quench the thirst of the livestock and the population.

On the plateau are the remains of the Collemezzo Castle with a section of the tower, with a cistern and traces of defensive walls.

Built around the year 1000, the castle was the border of the Duchy of Ceccano for three centuries and was destroyed in 1372 by Cori.
