Where to celebrate the Carnival? The best Carnival parties near Rome

Have you already chosen where to celebrate the Carnival in 2019? The most Italian way to experience it is to take part in one of the outdoor Carnival parties in Lazio where yesterday's tradition intertwines with the fun of today. Allegorical floats and masks parade through the towns while food and wine events are organized where it is possible to taste the sweets typical of the local tradition.

Some manifestations refer to the popular life, like the mask of Rugantino in Rome that underlines and accentuates the typical characteristics of the common people. Others are a real reference to rural life as in the Carnival of Velletri, called the Popular Veliterno, a parade created in 1931 on agricultural carriages decorated with the tools of the peasant world. Today those wagons have been replaced by grand allegorical compositions.

But the most entertaining events are the goliardic ones like the Carnival of Frosinone that recalls the revolt against the French troops and is called the Feast of the Ràdeca in honour of the leaves of the agave plant that are carried by all the participants. In Pontecorvo the Carnival has its roots in the history of the city, when in the past it was placed under the attack of the Moors.

The oldest Carnival in Lazio, and among the most beautiful in Italy, is undoubtedly that of Ronciglione going on for more than years, whose performances recall episodes such as the cavalcades of the Hussars and the Corsa dei Barberi. The areas into which the city has been divided contend for the Palio della Manna.
