Porto Empedocle and the magic of the Almond Blossom Festival in Agrigento

My memories occasionally come back to mind. Now that I have been a Berlin citizen for 3 generations, now with a wonderful family, where no one has lost memories of the Bel Paese.

I am originally from Porto Empedocle, but at 17 I left my beautiful Sicily for love, although I married a Sicilian!!!

To be exact, they call us the "Marinisi", those who live in Marina di Porto Empedocle where the most beautiful beaches of the coast gather many tourists from all over the world.

We come up to the imposing and unique Scala dei Turchi, which with its white colour, it makes a wonderful setting on the blue sea of Agrigento.
At the port and at the Spiaggetta we met to walk with friends, when we were allowed to.
Memories of looks that crossed and that brought us back on the following week to be able to see each other again ... what pain ... what do today's kids know?
I who waited anxiously for Sunday to put on my new dress to walk in Via Roma, to greet every person I met, because "In Marina" we all knew each other, at least by sight.
The smiles and the only excuse of being able to go get ice cream were perfect for socializing!
The memory of the sound of church bells, with their loud ringing for the holidays. These woke me up on Sunday morning, along with the scent of mocha coffee.
Childhood smells, still fervent in my memory like the memory of Dad who gathered us all around the table for a good morning that we could not have during the week because it was divided between school and work.
The cakes and tarts smelled of so much love, the same with which I prepare them to this day, with the recipes we have handed down.

These are the most beautiful things that I keep in my memory. As well as the Almond Blossom Festival, a popular festival in the city of Agrigento in which folk groups from various parts of the world participate.

My companions and I almost always played truant from school to be present at every parade.

At sunset, the event in the Valley of the Temples continues with the lighting of the torch of friendship in front of the temple of Concordia: folklore, art and culture come together in a thousand-year-old place with smells of almond and olive trees.
The most important event of the festival takes place during the end of the festival, when folk groups parade with Sicilian carts and musical bands from the city to the Valley of the Temples. We could not miss them!
At least once a year I go back to Sicily. I take German friends to visit it and try to convey to them the same emotions that I still carry in today!
