A writing contest for teaching kids the difference between playing a sport and understanding it deeply. The Scorrendoconilliri association promotes sports and small towns along the Liri with marathons and a sports writing contest reserved for high school students.
Why a writing contest dedicated to the 'Sports Stories'?
Because there is a profound difference between sports and sports culture, as taught to me by the teacher Massimo Gavarini explaining why certain sports don’t have many followers.
‘When you are young and practice sports all children inevitably dream of going to the Olympics and this is natural and right. But a teacher knows that not all of us can go, very few indeed will have that privilege.’
Who are these Lucky Ones? They are those who have an absolute determination. It is not said that at the outset who is the best, their talent emerges in the long term and with the ability to be concentrated on their goals every day.
And everyone else what do they do?
To answer this question you need to promote sports culture, it means not only to be focused on the champions but to promote deep understanding and interest in the sport and for the emotions that it gives to every player.
If you are able to do this then that child will remain linked to the sport all his life, he will learn to appreciate a healthy lifestyle and follow sports events for the pleasure of participating in the challenges of sport.
How do you transmit the values of sports culture?
There is no single secret, but certainly opening the mind of the child and teaching him or her to look at the sport from other angles helps and this literary competition organized by Scorrendo con il Liri is one of these examples.
Scorrendoconilliri organizes an annual Ecoultramarathon starting from Cappadocia that follows the river through the beautiful villages of Castellafiume, Capistrello, Canistro, Civitella Roveto, Civita d'Antino Scalo, Morino Scalo, San Vincenzo Valle Rovereto, Balsorano, Sora and Isola del Liri. For its unique connection between sport and culture it has the patronage of both the Italian Olympic Committee and UNESCO as well as the two regions crossed by the river Liri: Abruzzo and Lazio.
The marathon is perhaps the most emblematic case of the link between sport and culture. To promote the marathon is to speak of health of the body and diet but also involves the pleasure of the course, the places which are crossed, the natural and artistic beauties.
To participate in the writing competition the contestant must be a secondary school student and create a "sports story" which can be a newspaper article (6000 characters) or a true short story (18,000 characters). The information to compete can be found on the site www.Scorrendoconilliri.it.
We are delighted to partner with the Scorrendoconilliri Association and to be involved in the award for the writing competition in two ways. We will translate and publish the articles of the winners on our portal www.discoverplaces.travel and hold a web writing lesson for the top three.
Writing on the web requires a particular style and some rules that must be followed in order to attract the attention of a 'digital reader', a viewer who wants to go straight to the essence of the information but also wishes to be excited.
The program Scorrendo con il Liri is not just a sports event but it is also a series of cultural events from April to September organized in the municipalities crossed by the river Liri in its path from the source to the junction with the Garigliano and down to the sea in the village of Minturno.
It is an entire area that you will want to know better thanks to these sporting events and we are proud to be part of this.
