Ariccia

Coat of arms of Ariccia
Perhaps Ariccia was founded in about 2750 BC by Theseus, the founder of Athens, but only in 338 did it obtain Roman citizenship. Ariccia was a stop along the Appian way and its history follows the one of the road and the power of Rome.

At the end of the millenium it was under the rule of the Counts of Tusculum and then became one of the possessions of the Camera Apostolica and subsequently entered into a period of decline and neglect.

Ariccia was reborn in 1600 with Cardinal Chigi, nephew of Alexander VII. Many landscaping works were carried out by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, brother of Luigi and Carlo Fontana, that turned it into a baroque jewel.
