Roiate

Coat of arms of Roiate
Roiate has a long history that starting from the Equi who had established their base here for attacks against the Romans.

In the Middle Ages it became famous for the passage of St. Benedict who imprinted his body in a still guarded boulder in the church dedicated to him.

In the tenth century it is mentioned in the "diploma" of Emperor Otto I, where it is among the properties of the Abbey of Subiaco. In 1174 Raone Landolfo, descendant of a branch of the Lombard counts of Ceccano, occupied it by force and the abbot Simon had to turn to the pope who sent his troops to free it.

Throughout the Middle Ages it remained the property of the Church and in the eighteenth century was placed under the control of the Congregazione del Buon Governo.
