Ischia di Castro. Castro

In the area of Ischia di Castro are the ruins of Castro, the ancient capital of the Farnese Duchy, and perhaps it was also the site of Statonia.

The medieval town was restored and embellished in 1537 by the architect Antonio da Sangallo the Younger commissioned by Paul III. Then, in 1649 the city was destroyed by order of Pope Innocent X.

The remains of the city are covered with a thick forest and for centuries were ransacked.

You can see the remains of massive walls, the Renaissance square with the flooring in a herringbone pattern, and the few remains of the surrounding buildings such as the mint, the inn and some private houses.

Recently the church of Santa Maria "Intus civitatem", the convent of San Francesco, the church of San Pancrazio and the cathedral of San Savino have all been identified.
