In the eighth century, some refugees in the city of Aquino, destroyed by the Lombards, found shelter on the top of the inhospitable Mount Asprano where Gastaldi Aquinas built the castle Castrum Coeli.
This castle also had to counter the expansionist aims of the Abbey of Montecassino who had built the nearby castle of Roccasecca.
The castle was restored several times, fortified and remained in fact inhabited until the fifteenth century, when the inhabitants chose to go down in search of a more hospitable place to live.
Remaining today of the imposing castle are only the keep and some sections of the fortress with a few towers, including one facing Roccasecca.
The castle ruins are now part of a magnificent natural park with medieval-historical references and a wild and fascinating countryside.
