Fiano Romano. The Ciborium of St Stephan old

With the unification of Italy some churches were desecrated and sold to individuals. This is the case of the church of Santo Stefano Vecchio, the first to be built in Fiano Romano.

The three-nave church had an altar with a marble canopy, called a ciborium, designed to give more emotion to the moment of the Eucharist.

The ciborium of St Stphen old Santo Stefano Vecchio is a simple but elegant quadrilateral structure of white marble, more than four meters high and four meters wide.

After many vicissitudes it is now exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and is considered one of the best pieces of medieval art in the collection.
