Fontana Liri. Lake Solfatara

The lake called Solfatara in Fontana Liri originates from a sulphurous mineral water spring with therapeutic properties and ferruginous water. It is recognizable by the characteristic smell of sulphur.

The Romans were the first to appreciate the wholesomeness of its water by building spas and villas, including the Villa Lateria belonged to Quintus, Cicero's brother.

In ancient times the farmers filled flasks with sulphurous water which they then went to sell from their carts on the streets of Arpino, Sora and Isola Liri because it was thought that the exhalations of sulphurous waters could ward off the plague.
