The medieval village of Lanuvio was founded to oversee and defend the coast from the incursions of the Saracens.
Roman material was used to build the castle and you can still recognize the stones in peperino from the Temple of Hercules.
In the eleventh century, the village developed thanks to the efforts of the Benedictine monks and the castle was fortified by walls and five towers (four still visible).
The Civita castle was totally demolished in 1347 by the Frangipane interests but was rebuilt with new structures in the fourteenth century.
