Agosta. Church of Our Lady of Peace and St Benedict

The hurch of Our Lady of Peace and St Benedict and San Benedetto church was built in 1930 in the homonymous hamlet of Agosta and was built at the behest of the bishop of Subiaco.

This inhabited center has a very ancient history and was initially built at a landing port where the Aniene river formed a small lake. It was frequented by the emperor Nero on his journey to reach the villa of Subiaco. Later, with the barbarian invasions and the movement of the population into fortresses in the hilly areas, the center was depopulated. The hamlet then flourished again at the end of the 19th century around a mill and has been a thriving commercial center ever since.

Despite being of recent construction, the church appears in a medieval Romanesque style in stone called "goldfinch". The bell tower has three rows of mullioned windows and is located on the right-hand side slightly set back from the facade.

Inside it has a single nave with two side chapels and has a wooden truss roof. The main altar area is raised with a balustrade that separates it from the rest of the nave. The altar has a canopy carved in travertine.

Along the walls of the nave, beautiful majolica tiles illustrate the via crucis while the baptismal font area and one of the chapels are frescoed and tell the story of the Madonna and St. John the Baptist.

Next to the altar is the statue of the Our Lady of Peace - Madonna della Pace which is carried in procession and celebrated at the end of August in Agosta together with the strozzapreti festival.
