In the heart of the historic center of Arcinazzo Romano, in a small square that opens up between the alleys, the austere facade of the church of Our Lady of the Assumption - Santa Maria Assunta stands out.
The first news of this church is found in a document from the early 1300s, while a first expansion is mentioned in a pastoral visit of 1575 and the bell tower was restored about a century later.
The current form dates back to the nineteenth century when the church took on its current neoclassical appearance inside following the project of the architect Nicola Jona from Trevi nel Lazio.
The light plaster facade appears austere and without openings, apart from the beautiful entrance door made from one of the marbles of the nearby imperial Roman villa of Trajan.
The bell tower made of stone was obtained from an ancient medieval tower and over the years it has been partially incorporated by the enlargement of the church.
The interior is divided into 3 naves and the central one has a barrel vaulted roof while the lateral ones have lowered domes. The altar area is separated by a balustrade and ends with the image of the Madonna assumed into heaven.
Inside there is the statue of St George, protector of Arcinazzo Romano, with the car to carry it in procession and a large canvas depicting St George defeating the dragon.
Above the entrance there is a decorated wooden choir loft which houses an organ.
