Belmonte in Sabina. Church and convent of St. Nicholas

The simple church of St. Nicholas is located inside the convent in Belmonte in Sabina.

They are among conifers and aspens on a hill outside the castle, that once was called Cuckoo Hill.

The church of St Nicholas dates from the twelfth century (there is document from 1153).

In 1573 the monastery reached its zenith with the construction of a cloister but in 1862 it was left by the religious community and sold at auction.

The church has a nave with a trussed roof and four small chapels along the perimeter walls.

Inside, among the art objects, you may notice an earthenware water font of the eighteenth century, and wooden sculpture of St. Francis of the same period.
