Pozzaglia Sabina. Church of Santa Maria del Piano

This church of Santa Maria del Piano tin Pozzaglia Sabina was once a powerful and prosperous abbey of which little remains because of numerous thefts.

The first documentation of the eleventh century is located in the register of the Abbey of Farfa.

Oral traditions speak of a church founded in the ninth century by Charlemagne.

Of the limestone facade you see only the walls and the Romanesque bell tower to the side.

The interior has a Latin cross plan with a semicircular apse.

The beginning of the decline began in the nineteenth century, when the nearby village of Orvinio was struck by cholera disease.

The residents began burying the dead beneath the church slowly destroying the entire building.

To this crisis were added destruction due to earthquakes and lightning.
