Manziana. Caldara of Manziana

Within the Regional Natural Park of the Bracciano-Martignano is the area of the Caldara of Manzanita, recognized as a site of Community importance.

The caldara is a small crater of about 90 hectares with a source of sulphurous water at about 20 degrees and is what remains of the ancient Sabatino volcano. The spring has been known since ancient times for its healing qualities and it seems that Roman soldiers came to Manziana to refresh themselves and take care of themselves on their return from military campaigns.

Until recent years, shepherds also brought their flocks to take care of themselves in these waters and muds.

The peculiarity of Caldara is the presence of a grove of birch trees (Betula pendula), at the edge of the bog.

This plant is typical at much higher areas above sea level and those located in northern Europe and the explanation of the presence of these birch are two: an import occurred years ago or a remnant of the post-glacial period. Here the plant would remain finding in the Caldara microhabitats ideal for growth.
