Bassano in Teverina. Vladimone volcanic lake

In ancient times Lake Vladimone, Lacus Vladimonis, in Bassano in Teverina was considered sacred.

On its banks Etruscans made rituals and held seasonal festivals.

The Romans dipped their weapons in its waters to make them invincible.

The lake was described by Pliny the Elder as "a wheel on its side, with a circumference in total regular, paler color, greener and more intense than the marine environment".

Today, the lake has almost disappeared and is regularly fed by sulfur springs.

Its water is milky, together with marsh vegetation that form clusters that look like those "floating islands" that some Latin authors wrote about.
