Anagni. Cere's Gate

Anagni. Cere's Gate

'Cere's Door' is the gateway to Anagni coming from Rome and has been since the Ernico period, as told by Marcus Aurelius.

It had been dedicated to the goddess Ceres, the goddess of fertility, motherhood and birth and it was believed that all the flowers, the fruits of the earth and the living beings were her gifts.

Once the gate was incorporated into the wall system, and protected by towers, that were destroyed for the first time by the Spanish siege of 1556.

It was then rebuilt together with the new wall system of the ramparts in a different position from the previous one. Its current form, detached from the wall, makes it look like a triumphal arch and is due to nineteenth-century restorations.

Above the gate you can see the emblem of the city with the eagle grabbing the lion plus the papal keys while on the two sides are two great eagles
