Anagni. St Francis Gate or Gate of the Sun

The current St Francis Gate (Porta San Francesco in Italian)  was built after the destruction of the medieval walls during the 16th century Spanish siege.

The door was rebuilt under the papacy of Pope Pius IV and the Pope's coat of arms is in the keystone of the arch.

The door consists of an arch built in blocks of fine carved travertine with two lateral walkways. Among the walls that surround it, other significant architectural forms typical of the sixteenth century can be recognised, which refine the construction.

The door was once called Porta del Sole (Gate of the Sun) and today takes its name from a statue of San Francesco (Saint Francis) that is next to and near a relief with the insignia and the motto of the Leader Torquato Conti.
