La Rocca (fortress) Monaldeschi of Cervara is in the historic centre of Bolsena, at the highest point of the district called Castello, which is also the oldest of Tuscia.
From its four towers you can enjoy the incredible view of the lake and the whole area where the famous Via Cassia, built by the Romans, passes.
This medieval fortress dates back to 1156 when Pope Hadrian IV fortified the villages located on Via Cassia to defend from the barbarian incursions.
The fortress has a square plan with towers at the corners and its current form dates back to the XIII-XIV century.
Passed to the powerful Orvieto family of the Monaldeschi it was destroyed by the population in 1815 to prevent it being taken by Luciano Bonaparte.
Its current form was the result of a faithful reconstruction. Today it houses the Territorial Museum of Lake Bolsena.
