This Colonna palace was built in the 12th century in Cave in the area known today as Via Piè di Palazzo.
Of the stronghold with a watchtower from that period, only traces of spurs and buttresses remain.
The tower enabled the valley to be controlled and had the function of "Maschio" of Cave castle.
The castle was commissioned by Pietro Colonna of the powerful Roman family.
In the Renaissance the castle was transformed into a noble palace of the marquisate.
After the First World War it became barracks of the carabinieri and in World War II it was housing for the soldiers.
Since 1943 it has been owned by the Mazzoni family.
