In the 11th century, defensive walls were built in Sperlonga with access gates to the village to stem the raids from the sea by the Saracens.
The Saracens took the inhabitants of the village of Sperlonga and reduced them to slavery.
Today only two gates - Porta Carrese, or Portella, and Porta Marittima - remain. Above each of the two doors you can admire the coat of arms with the eagle of the Caetani family.
