Gorga. Fountain of the Shepherdess

The fountain of the Shepherdess is the symbol of Gorga and is the first artwork that a visitor meets when arriving in the village. The bronze sculpture represents a shepherdess in Ciociarian costume with goats, depicted in the act of drinking. It is placed on a rock ridge above a circular marble basin adorned with a lion's head.

The work was created at the end of the 19th century by the sculptor Ernesto Biondi, born in nearby Morolo, and was commissioned by Pope Leo XIII, born in nearby Carpineto Romano, to celebrate the arrival of the aqueduct in the historic center of Gorga.

The water reached the fountain through a 5.5 km pipeline that started from Mount Saint Marin and the inauguration took place in 1891.

The devotion of the gorgans saved the sculpture of the shepherdess of Gorga during the Second World War when the government seized many bronze sculptures to melt them down and use them for warfare.
