Historically, all the women of Jenne went to bake bread and cakes in the wood-burning oven of the town which dates back to 1751 and is located right in the oldest part of the medieval village. The oven was managed by a 'fornara' who decided the shifts of the ladies and the temperature of the oven.
The oven was used above all for bread, but above all during the holidays traditional desserts such as giglietti, milk biscuits and tortiglioni were prepared.
