Percile. Borghese palace

Borghese palace is located at the highest point of Percile and was created from the transformation of the ancient medieval castle.

The castle was born as a point of refuge for the population but also a point of control of this area between the Sabina and the Aniene Valley. In the Middle Ages, the first was under the control of the Farfa Abbey and the second under that of the diocese of Tivoli.

The history of the abbey of Farfa is particular in that it reached considerable power with the arrival of the German emperors of Frederick Redbeard and in the struggles between the papacy and the empire it sided with the imperial side.

Its decline therefore began with the defeat of Conradin of Swabia and the arrival of the French, the Angevins called by the pope. After its fall, the castle of Percile passed under the control of the church which entrusted it to various feudal lords. The first were the Orsinis in the thirteenth century, followed by the Acts of Todi.

From 1596 the feud of Percile passed under the control of the Borghese family which remained until the unification of Italy.

The transformation of the castle into a baronial palace and the arrangement of the nearby church of Santa Lucia, once the chapel of the castle, are owed to the Borghese.

Today the castle is the seat of the municipality, thus preserving its role as the center of the administrative and social life of Percile.
