Montefiascone. Porta di Borgo (Village Gate)

The door takes its name from being the entrance to the village and its current form derives from the eighteenth-century construction in Montefiascone.

In fact, Cardinal Pompeo Aldrovandi, bishop of Montefiascone from 1734-52, commissioned the Roman architect Domenico Gregorini to give a new layout to the village by redesigning the route of the Via Cassia and the internal path to the walls.

The ancient Via Cassia that passed through San Flaviano was diverted until you get in front of this door that then became the monumental entrance to the town. From this an elegant straight road started, connecting it with the internal door and the medieval nucleus.

The shape of the door dates back to 1744, as recorded on a marble plaque placed on the upper part of the entrance, and its monumental style is typical of this area of Upper Lazio.
