Civitella d'Agliano. Santa Maria castle

Civitella d'Agliano. Santa Maria castle

The village of Civitella d'Agliano was formed with the fall of the Roman Empire around a fortified castle on a hill. What we see today dates back to the 11th century and was built by the Counts of Bagnoregio, who later took the name of Monaldeschi della Cervara.

During the struggle between the papacy and the empire, the castle of Santa Maria experienced several vicissitudes and in 1322 was destroyed by the nearby and powerful town of Orvieto.

Orvieto then entrusted the castle to the Orsini and ordered its reconstruction. But the disputes continued and the castle had many changes of ownership.

Today the castle is a privately owned farmhouse.
