Veroli. Town Hall

The Town Hall of Veroli stands on the area where the ancient Roman Forum was located and preserves some parts dating back to the Roman period such as the cryptoporticus.

The municipality of Veroli was established in the twelfth century and among the public officers of the city we find the cardinal Benedetto Caetani, who maintained this role even when he was elected Pope with the name of Boniface VIII.

The Statute of Veroli is still preserved in the Biblioteca Giovardiana.

The medieval palace was destroyed by a fire in the sixteenth century and was rebuilt in the following centuries.

One of its most important rooms is the Council Chamber renovated around 1920 by artisans coordinated by the artist Stanislao de Witten who painted the walls.

The hall is enriched by sculptured wooden seats of the eighteenth century taken from the church of San Martino.

On the walls the story of Veroli is told through a series of medallions that represent Gracilia, a Verolana woman mentioned by Tacitus in Book II of her "Historiae", the patron Saint Salome and the humanists Giovanni Antonio Sulpicio and Aonio Paleario.

A place of honour is held for the coats of arms of the confederate cities of Atina, Alfedena and Palestrina.
