Cisterna di Latina. Museum of the Buttero (cow boy)

Cisterna di Latina was an outpost of the Pontine marshes and the home of the 'Butteri', the Italian cowboys'. Butteri are typical cow boys who guided and guarded the herds of Maremma cattle and buffalo. Maremma is the flat land between Lazio and Tuscany regions.

The Museum of the Buttero (cow boy) shows equipment and techniques of the herders that are still alive in the local tradition and are recalled with performances and equestrian events in many towns in Lazio.

Among the stories, remembered is when Buffalo Bill came to these areas and was defeated in a competition by local butteri.
