Civitella San Paolo. Festival of Baskets

The festival of Baskets of Civitella San Paolo is one of the oldest events that has been taking place without interruption since ancient Rome and has became, over the centuries, also a Christian tradition.

The festival gives thanks for the arrival of spring and young 'bearers' march in procession wearing peasant costumes and large 'baskets' on the head. The baskets are cylindrical cones covered with flowers and ribbons.

At the end of the parade and the liturgy, the traditional 'Aniseed Braids'  (Braid shaped bread of aniseed) are distributed. This is recognized as a typical product of Civitella San Paolo.
