The Palio of the Tribute is the reenactment of the events that took place from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century in Priverno.
The origins of the festival dates back to the time when the inhabitants of the ancient Roman Privernum in the Mezzagosto plains, abandoned the city in the IX-X century and founded the surrounding towns.
The tribute was paid to the municipality of Priverno by the castles in surrounding countries: including Sonnino, Maenza, Prossedi and perhaps Roccagorga and Roccasecca dei Volsci.
In one of Pope Alexander III in 1175, when the town entered the Papal States, it is understood that all neighboring municipalities were then under the control of Priverno to whom they paid a tax.
The delivery of this tax took place in a solemn ceremony with military parade and a horse race, from Porta Posterola a Porta Caetana.
The festival aims to be a reenactment of the ceremony and is divided into three phases: the historical procession through the streets of Priverno of the ancient military parade, the offering of wine with the delivery of tribute in the square of the town and finally the race for the ring.
The Palio is run with a saddled horse and a military lance without iron tip. The prize consists of a drape painted by local artists.
The competition starts in June with a festival of four "doors": Porta Campanina, Porta Posterola, Porta Romana and Porta Paolina and ends on the first Sunday of July with the Palio of the Tribute.
