Ischia di Castro. Tournament of Rooster - Giostra del Gallinaccio

The feast of the patron Sant'Ermete (Hermes) of Ischia di Castro is on August 28, and alongside the religious celebrations the Tournament of the Rooster - Giostra del Gallinaccio takes place.

Ermete was a Roman centurion who converted to Christianity, and subsequently he was martyred.

According to the pagan tradition, the rooster represents the devil and its death scares away the devil.

The tournament begins with a historical parade with knights on horseback from the Duchy of Castro: there are twenty knights with the colours of the five districts.

The parade ends in the main square and the tournament begins.

In the evening the town's streets are set up for the Medieval Bivouac, and the old town is transformed into a medieval village. The menu offers typical dishes of the time.
