Borgo Velino. Festival of the Antrodoco Chestnut

The festival of the Antrodoco Chestnut of Borgo Velino celebrates the fruit that was the diet of the inhabitants of the Velino Valley, since the Norman invasion of the twelfth century.

There have been planted new crops of fruit chestnut trees that had been abandoned during the industrialization.

In the 1970s a producers’ cooperative has relaunched the cultivation of this nutritious fruit.

The brown Antrodoco Chestnut belongs to the species Castanea Sativa Miller and is characterized by a sweet, delicate flavour.
