Vetralla. Oil Festival and Panonti Competition

Vetralla. Oil Festival and Panonti Competition

The last weekend of November in Vetralla is celebrated the new oil with a weekend of tastings.

The festival ends with the famous Panonti Competition, dedicated to those who make the best dish.

The term ‘panonto’ comes from the word pan-unto (oily bread) and indicates a slice of uta bread with sausage fat or other roasted meat.

In the past, wild boars were used a lot, especially in the Tuscia area.

But it can also be a simple slice of bread with fresh oil and then it looks like the traditional bruschetta.

The race takes place on Sunday afternoons and begins with the lighting of the fires and the cooking of the meat that will then have to serve to grease the bread.

At the end of the afternoon a jury decrees the winner of the competition.
