In August, there is two weeks of partying in Montefiascone for the Wine Festival, an event born over 60 years ago to promote the famous local wine Est! Est! Est! and over the years this festival has become an opportunity to promote the products of the area.
Montefiascone has a special position overlooking the Lake of Bolsena in the upper Tuscia. A very interesting story is that of the Est! Est! Est! wine that according to the legend was discovered by the German bishop Giovanni Defuk who was a member of the retinue of king Henry V during his trip to Rome for his coronation.
Legend has it that the bishop had sent a servant in advance to report with the word EAST the cellars that served good wine. Arrived in Montefiascone, the servant was so impressed by the quality of the local wine that on the door of the inn he wrote the word three times: Est! Est! Est!
On his death, Bishop Defuk had himself buried in Montefiascone, in the church of San Flaviano, and left a legacy to the community so that every year on his birthday they would pour wine on his grave.
From this story was born then in the 1960s the re-creation of a historical parade that tells the story of Defuk and that takes place on the occasion of the Wine Festival of Montefiascone. During the festival there are also several popular games such as the Palio delle Botti.
