Acquafondata. Feast of Madonna del Carmine

In the town of Acquafondata, on July 16th and August 28th the Madonna del Carmine or Carmelo is celebrated with impressive torchlight descents from the Santuario del Carmine.

July 16, 1841 is the day when the Madonna appeared to Nicolina Carcillo and had reproached her not being in town to celebrate the Madonna del Carmine with others.

Our Lady asked her to build a small temple on the site of their meeting to remind all those who worked in the fields to dedicate time to prayer.

On the evening of July 16, the statue of the Madonna is brought from the sanctuary to the church of Saint John with the torchlight procession. The statue then returns to the sanctuary on the last Sunday of July.

On August 28, before the feast of the patron Saint John, the statue is brought with a procession in the church of Saint John.
