In Priverno, the Good Friday procession, from the Middle Ages, is a very ancient religious tradition in which the confraternities have always played a predominant role.
An important aspect of the Good Friday procession in Priverno is the musical apparatus that accompanies it.
Each carriage, except the cataletto, is accompanied by a choir specially prepared by the confraternities or by different groups that, at the fixed stops along the processional path, sing a song.
The presence of the choirs is documented in the nineteenth century, when their preparation was entrusted to the chapel masters paid by the Municipality. The band formed in 1817 has always participated preceding the carriage of the Dead Christ, that is the bier.
The term "cataletto" is the oldest term used to refer to the carriage of the Dead Christ.
The procession unfolds among the alleys of the historic centre with the carriages and songs that represent the painful mysteries. Before the ordeal of the calvary the “sacconi” parade.
These are penitents hooded and barefoot united by a chain tied to the feet and with a cross on their shoulders.
They are followed by women dressed in black with black flags escorting the cataletto, symbolizing those who laid Jesus in the tomb.
The procession starts from the Church of Santa Maria and arrives at the same place around 11pm.
During the evening some choral songs are celebrated by the brotherhoods of Priverno at each established stop in the historic centre, where each song represents the individual events of Good Friday.
