Artena. The Cristi Infiorati

Artena. The Cristi Infiorati

The Christi Infiorati are large wood crucifixes (2.5 x 1 m) surmounted by a structure of woven reeds of wild asparagus and garnished with thousands of flowers.

They are carried in procession by the Brotherhoods on the festival of Our Lady of Grace.

The preparation of each Christ requires many days of work: the first task is to build a reed structure around the crucifix.

The structure is then interwoven with wild asparagus that are "pinned" with willow twigs or broom.

The already woven "bed" of asparagus is sometimes covered with strips of laurel leaves sewn one on the other with a cotton thread.

A decorative and ornamental or symbolic (lamb, dove, bell, candlesticks etc.) design is then applied which is subsequently covered with flowers.

At the top of each flower structure, in the centre, the emblem of the brotherhood is reproduced.
