Valmontone. Representation of Good Friday

The representation of Good Friday is the oldest manifestation in Valmontone which began in 1903 ago by the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore with a heartfelt and participatory 'Procession of the Dead Christ' along the streets of the town.

Young girls sang a sacred hymn with the marching band as 4 brotherhoods advanced in red hooded tunics and carrying lanterns. After a series of figures from the gospel scenes, a large statue of the dead Christ was carried in procession on a black drapery full of flowers.

The statue is carried on the shoulder by young people in seventeenth-century clothes.

Since 1951 the event has become the Sacred Representation with over 150 figures in traditional clothing representing the last hours of Christ's passion: from the last supper to the resurrection.

On Holy Saturday the procession is organized by the Confraternity of the Madonna delle Grazie: the wooden statue of the Pietà, a copy of that of Michelangelo.

On Easter morning the Risen Christ is carried in procession.
