Above Guarcino is Campocatino plateau at about 1800 meters above sea level, that is one of the oldest ski resorts of Lazio with one chairlift and three ski lifts.
The area offers 15 km of downhill slopes, a snow park and a position among the snowy Apennines, due to direct exposure to the western humid currents.
Besides skiing, in summer you can go downhill biking, horse riding or trekking through the various paths and tracks. T
he area is also equipped with a Hotel, Residence, restaurants, bars and rental equipment.
Due to its particular rounded profile, Campocatino has been chosen since the 1920s by people interested in cross-country and alpine skiing.
However, the real boom occurred in the 1950s, in those years, international skiing competitions were also held.
Campocatino: nature, art and sport
In winter, Campocatino is a great place for children who can have fun learning to ski in a protected and controlled environment.
The shape of the slopes and the plateau makes it a favorite destination for all parents who want to 'give children freedom' but still keep them under surveillance.
In the summer, however, the woods are filled by lovers of trekking, both because across the plateau passes a variant of the path of St. Benedict suited to the more sporty, and because there are some paths that end with contemporary artwork (Land Art) realized by Massimiliano Floridi.
The descents of Campocatino are also travelled by mountain-bike enthusiasts. The slopes are very well suited to the variants known as 'downhill' and 'freeride'.
Downhill (DH) is a discipline that involves riding virtually straight downhill along 2 to 5 kilometers of slopes prepared on the steeper sections with natural or artificial obstacles such as jumps, leaps of several metres and sloping sections with rocks and roots.
Freeride (FR) is a discipline that takes place downhill but which focuses on style, aerial maneuvers and technical parts of the routes.
Its name comes from the 'freeride’ coined by snowboarders where you descend a natural slope without a precise path, goals and rules.
All this excitement comes with a scenic view that, during days of particular cleanliness of the air, you can look east and west and catch a view of the two seas: the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian in which you can distinguish the Pontine Islands.
