Pink Floyd, from rock to classical music

Colleferro, Teatro Vittorio Veneto

The last event of the Colleferro theatre season was a musical show dedicated to Pink Floyd, the famous English rock band founded in 1965 that gave moments of great music to an entire generation. They had a style all their own and more than songs I would say that they produced musical pieces.

At that time, we were all amazed by the length of their songs that we listened to in strict silence, as if we were listening to classical music. We could say that their lyrics were philosophical manifestos and the one of “Another brick in the wall” dedicated to the educational system of children remains iconic.

They were not just a rock band, but they created a lifestyle, so much so that the image that I associate with their name is that of the famous concert on a large floating stage along the Grand Canal in Venice. An event never repeated and for this even more extraordinary (if we can say so).

The municipality of Colleferro had promoted this show as a cover of Pink Floyd, but how can you call a show where the skill of the musicians is comparable to that of large orchestras a ‘cover’?

Otherwise, we will have to define the replicas of the great maestro's symphonies as a 'cover' of Beethoven!

My feeling was that the show of Impulse (the Roman group born in 2008, protagonist of the show) has definitively ferried Pink Floyd into the realm of classical music, the kind that is played in theaters or at musical events.

I must admit that at first it seemed strange to applaud every song and behave with the same respect that I reserve for an opera. Then I changed my attitude and began to wander with my mind thinking about how revolutionary Mozart had been in his time. So, I was no longer surprised to be sitting in a comfortable armchair in the theater appreciating the skill of the musicians and the complex beauty of the musical score.

I think we just need to redefine some terms that are used in live music shows. Today we call concerts only those of classical music, or of artists still alive, and we call covers those of modern musical groups that re-propose the music of groups of the past.

But some music like that of Pink Floyd is now so classic that we can define the Colleferro show as a concert of Pink Floyd music.

We have managed to do concerts with some film soundtracks, just think of Ennio Moricone, and it is time to do it also with some rock groups that have marked the social and philosophical life of entire generations.

Congratulations to the choice of the mayor Pierluigi Sanna and an invitation to be innovative also in the musical cultural life by creating a new lexicon for high-level shows like that of Impulse in Colleferro.
