"Francigena Strata Peregrinorum" is the guide book of the Via Francigena del Sud that helps to discover the wonders of the journey and provides useful information to the pilgrim or just casual walker who travels through this appealing stretch from Rome through Lazio, Campania and Puglia.
Under the polished asphalts of the state roads and as part of the memory of the stories handed down from the past, precious paths are hidden. Not only are they walks on which to tread, but also true inner paths that lead beyond geographical places, with a challenging walk towards meeting and searching for oneself.
Sometimes it is faith, other-times an escape from danger, a received grace, an offering, or simple human curiosity, that pushes, every year, thousands of people to walk the Via Francigena.
Thus, Lucia Deidda and Oreste Polito after three years of incessant work, wrote the guide book ‘Francigena Strata Peregrinorum’, to be a support, as a practical book and as a valuable guide for all those who embark on this journey.
Starting from Rome, meticulously mapping and indicating the ancient Francigena road as it crosses Lazio, Campania and Puglia, the book at the same time immerses the reader in a fascinating open-air history in which to get excited and get involved.
Launched in San Giovanni Rotondo, the guide book is also on sale online, so is available to pilgrims and those who want to travel the Via Francigena: it informs and provides important details such as maps, heights and a well-described relationship of the route, with reports of supply points.
For those who want to travel, this guide book will help find the necessary technical data: accommodation for each stage with the relevant phone numbers, the bicycle assistance mechanic, the summary sheet with the main information, and everything that is necessary in addition to personal motivation of the pilgrim.
The book is based on the experiences of the authors, who have also taken care of the graphics, while the preface is by the pilgrim Philippe Seurre, who has travelled more than 20,000 km throughout Europe.
The path to follow will therefore be accompanied by a light and unique book which contains 500 kilometers of historical-cultural information, technical details, and the testimonies that are transformed into contributions by the people who live that path every day. inhabitants of the territory who have managed to create a network of hospitality and services.
It is a unique and original editorial project, necessary for those who face the path, whether they start it for an intense act of faith, or for a reference dogma but also for the sole purpose of observing the dawn of the arrival of the day discreetly.
The guide book also contains and documents the stories of pilgrims and of what has given strength and balance to their steps. The vivid interest in the places of the Archangel, historical stages of the pilgrimage, or the "places-stage", with detailed information and the historical description of the symbol of the journey - the Viaria Cross - shaped in the Middle Ages and still an icon of this journey.
History, faith, culture, territory, are the key elements of this book, connected to explain how to face the Via Francigena del Sud and live with it in a true Pilgrimage: not only the final end of a devotional candle burning inside a sanctuary or in the hands of the pilgrims not all without faults to be expiated.
The book explains the history of a journey but also invites reflections inherent in the journey itself. The answers will be on stopping at nights, guests of a territory without borders, children of a wide valley or a fruitful crown to the river.
The answers will be for everyone: secular citizens or skeptical lovers of historical paths. They will be those who will walk and meet shepherds and flocks, will see birds that fly unexpectedly from their nests, will feel light rain and walk under the skies of new light, or will stop to welcome sacred places that smell of fantastic delicacies accompanied by a good wine, until the destination is reached, along the Via Francigena del Sud.
